New York Daily News menulis, Sarah White benar-benar menanggalkan pakaiannya satu per satu dalam sesi terapi telanjangnya tersebut layaknya seorang penari telanjang. Metode konselingnya ini sangat membantu para pasien pria di New York untuk mengungkap semua keluhannya.�

Sesi konseling White ini dimulai dengan terapi telanjang via online, yakni melalui webcam dan teks chat, dan dikenai biaya sebesar 150 dolar AS. Ia memulainya dengan berpakaian rapi dan untuk sesi yang membutuhkan waktu lama, ia mulai menanggalkan pakaiannya sampai telanjang. Untuk sesi selanjutnya, bahkan ia juga menawarkan sesi terapi serupa secara face to face.

"Untuk pria khususnya, yang jarang pergi ke terapi dibanding para wanita, terapi ini lebih menarik. Pendekatan ini ternyata lebih menginspirasi untuk terapi. Selama sesi saya akan menggunakan kekuatan gairah untuk membiarkan Anda mendapatkan kontrol lebih besar atas hidup Anda," ucap White.

"Tujuan menggunakan ketelanjangan adalah agar Anda dapat memahami diri sendiri dan dunia Anda yang lebih baik, sehingga Anda dapat merasa hebat dan kuat, dan kesenangan yang Anda rasakan selama sesi dapat menyebabkan lebih banyak kesenangan di luar sesi," jelas White.

White juga mengatakan kaum pria yang menjadi pasiennya amat bervariasi. Baik profesi maupun problematikanya. Sekitar 30-an orang kliennya adalah mahasiswa dengan masalah seksual, pria paruh baya dengan masalah hubungan suami-istri, dan bahkan beberapa pasangan wanita yang hanya ingin menikmati chatting telanjangnya.

Tidak mengherankan, para psikolog profesional menyambut idenya itu dengan penentangan. Diana Kirschner, seorang psikolog klinis New York, mengatakan kepada Daily News, "Dia menggunakan kata terapi di sini, tetapi saya tidak menganggap ini sebuah terapi. Saya menganggap ini sebagai porno interaktif internet soft-core."

Interaksi seksual antara pasien dan terapis ini juga dianggap sangat tidak etis oleh American Psychoanalytic Association, sebuah organisasi psikologi terbesar dan tertua di AS. A child or adult diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder will have challenges in the same 3 developmental areas.
Autism is usually diagnosed in a child before they are 3 years old so when your child is born you don’t know they are autistic because it does not have any physical symptoms. It is called the ‘autistic spectrum’ because you can be affected by these difficulties to various degrees from mild to severe.
The areas of difficulty are :
1. Communication
2. Social interaction and
3. Imagination
Which are sometimes called the ‘triad of impairments’.
My son who has just turned 4 in July has a form of Autism but he has not yet been diagnosed properly because there are so many types of it out there. My son has communication difficulties as he can not yet talk which does affect his social interaction with other children but this has not stopped him starting mainstream school this September and all the children are really nice to him which is great and with his one to one support I know he will develop at his own pace but alongside other children his age that except him for who he is.
The Autistic spectrum is very broad. You may meet a person with Downs syndrome with autistic tendencies or a grown man or woman with a family who only received a diagnosis in their adult life. You can be mildly or severely affected by all of the areas described in the triad, or have more difficulty in one area, and less in others. Therefore every person on the autistic spectrum is unique with their own very specific challenges abilities and gifts.

The amount of people diagnosed with autism has in the last 20 years gone up from 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 150. That is a huge increase and it’s prompted a debate and extensive research to determine why there is such a dramatic increase in such a short length of time. Some say it is down to doctors being better able to make a diagnosis.
There is of course the MMR debate and some say that there is a clear link between diet and nutrition and the increased serge of autism. Others say there is a Genetic link..
Here is one story about a delightful little girl called Rosie who is just 5 years old and is affected by severe autism requiring a one-to-one, intensive education program that’s specially designed for her needs.
This of course costs money, and her family and friends have been fundraising in a variety of spectacular ways.
To raise money for Rosie a campaign was launched to get 100 women to pose naked in a field forming the word AUTISM for the front cover of the calendar. By the end of the first week they had 78 women signed up.
They have had 3,000 calendars printed, and if they sell all of them they will raise £26,000 for Rosie, and there fundraising burden will be lifted for nearly 2 years.

Gelang (Power Balance) memberikan pernyataan yang salah yang diklaim dapat meningkatkan keseimbangan telah diminta untuk melakukan pengembalian uang kepada pembelinya.

Iklan yang menyesatkan tentang klaim keunggulan gelang dan aksesoris Power Balance yang tidak terbukti, telah ditarik oleh produsen setelah ada Intervensi oleh Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Power Balance telah setuju untuk tidak lagi menyuplai produk yang berlabel menyesatkan dan pengembailan uang telah ditawarkan untuk mereka yang telah terlanjur membeli produk.

Gelang tersebut, lengkap dengan hologram yang dibuat dengan frekuensi 7.83mhz di pasarkan sebagai cara untuk meningkatkan keseimbangan, kekuatan dan fleksibelitas.

Akan tetapi para skeptik telah meragukan kebenaran bahwa frekuensi bias dirubah menjadi hologram apalagi memberikan efek kepada tubuh.

ACCC penyampaikan kekhawatirannya tentang klaim tersebut akan menyesatkan konsumen untuk percaya bahwa produk Power Balance memiliki keunggulan yang sebenarnya palsu.
Ketua ACCC Graeme Samuel mengatakan bahwa tidak ada fakta ilmiah yang mendukung.
“Konsumen harus hati hati terhadap produk yang mirip di pasaran yang memberikan klaim yang belum terbukti.” Katanya.

“Mereka mungkin tidak lebih menguntungkan dari gelang karet.”

I have discovered a diet food recipe plan that has its stock in the way food tastes. To be truthful, I cannot stand bland, tasteless food. It should be a crime to serve tasteless food. This diet plan that I found draws heavily on the stimulating Mediterranean type of food.

I like this kind of food. It is really tasty but I find that I get a lot of gas with this type of food. Mediterranean food focuses more on taste and appearance rather than calorie consciousness.

Fresh vegetables, olive oils, wines, lean meats and nuts are some of the ingredients that find their way into this particular dieting plan. Actually, nuts and oils are a rare find in any diet plan of today.

Your food must be tasty, if not, under this plan, it is rejected outright. Saturated fats, white flour and too much sugar are just plain bad for the human body, and they also are not accepted.

Is it your desire to lose weight quickly? Personally I do not go that way. I dislike quick fixes. I figure that it took me a long time to put these pounds on. It is probably going to take me a long time to take them off. But, whatever rocks your boat. Everyone is different.

The first ten days of the plan is devoted to quick weight loss. Clients are also encouraged to wean themselves off sugar and white flour.

During this time period you can tuck into things like tomatoes, greens, onions, whole wheat products, low fat cheeses and here is where the olive oil comes in. You are also encouraged to consume natural foods as well.

Two other phases are incorporated into the picture. I like the second one which focuses on weight loss and the third zeroes in on weight maintenance. Portion control is discussed and additional food choices are taken on board. Oddly enough exercise is not a biggie with this plan. Maybe that is why it does so well.

Unfortunately, this type of plan fits right in with the sedentary lifestyle. This is not good. Balance is important in any weight loss plan. The heart needs conditioning. Cardiovascular disease is the most common cause of death in America.

We need to condition ourselves through physical activity. Any plan that does not include proper physical activity is not a heart smart weight loss plan.

This diet food recipe plan helps you avoid trans fats which are a big no no! As a matter of fact, people who are not concerned with losing weight are drawn to this plan. The reason for this is because of the tasty recipes and food quality.

Anti aging is possible. The body is designed to heal and repair itself with the aid of proper nutrition. The body requires two vital materials to complete this - energy and raw material. These two requirements are needed to maintain the cell's proper functions. The body is made up of cells and all cells are living. All living things need food. Each cell needs the proper food to keep it strong. Cells die and replace themselves at various intervals. To understand antin-aging, understand that when a cell replaces itself it has three options that it can replace itself with:

1. A cell may replace itself with a weaker cell each time. A cell will do this if it hasn't had the right nutritional foods available to it. This process is called degeneration.

2. A cell can replace itself with the same strength cell. This means the body doesn't improve. That is, you have a chronic condition.

3. The cell is capable of replacing itself with a stronger and better cell. This will happen only if the cell has an abundance of energy and the right raw materials. This process is called regeneration. It is anti-aging.

Many of the foods that we have been told are good for us in actual fact may cause degeneration. This can be shown by muscle testing. Your kinesiologist can supply you with information on which foods to avoid to stop degeneration, and which foods to buy to aid regeneration and anti-aging.

FOODS WHICH CAN CAUSE DEGENERATION AND AGING ARE:

High levels of carbohydrate

Milk (especially homogenized milk) and cheese

A MAJOR cause of aging is heavy metals. Virtually all of us suffer from heavy metal toxicity.

The best way to remove heavy metals is by chelation, by I.V. or by suppository.

A good night's sleep every night, minimum eight hours.

In addition, frequent drinks of good water is crucial. We believe the best water is water that has been filtered by reverse osmosis. Next best would be spring water. Tap water is not as good because of the chlorine and the fluoride (although it is better than nothing). Distilled water is not as good for you - its energy has been altered. In Europe distilled water is labelled ``not for human consumption". Mineral water is not as good because the minerals are not in a form your body likes. Water that comes from the top of mountains is no good because, according to genius Victor Schauberger, it is lacking in oxygen. Many people's health problems and anti-aging would improve if they would just drink more good water!

Nutritionists like to divide food into a number of different groups. I suggest that you think about dividing food up into two food groups. One group produces acids when it is digested. The other group produces alkalies when it is digested. Our bodies are constantly producing waste products, much the same as the exhaust coming from the back of your car. Waste products are acidic. They are called toxins. Toxins cause tiredness, pain and aging. Therefore, if you want more energy and less pain and anti-aging, you need to eat less acid-producing food.

Foods that produce acids are carbohydrates and proteins. 'Foods' such as tea, coffee, softdrinks, sugar, flavourings, artificial sweetener and preserved meats are even more acidic i.e. toxic. And pollutants (such as heavy metals) and pesticides are even worse.

To neutralise an acid you need an alkali. The only foods that produce alkalis are fruit and vegetables, particularly leafy, green vegetables, such as sprouts, parsley and cabbage. That is why people should eat LOTS of fruit and especially vegetables, for anti-aging. Raw is best. And steamed is much, much better than boiled (as it retains the vitamins and minerals).

Once you begin to understand this, it is easy to see why so many people are suffering from health problems. Have a look at what people put into their shopping carts next time you are at the supermarket. (Lots of white bread, soft drinks and preserved meats). And have a look at what people have on their plate next time you are in a restaurant. Lots of carbohydrate and protein, and very few vegetables, except maybe for some lettuce.

This is not to say that we don't need protein and complex carbohydrates. We do. The key is BALANCE. We need to balance the acid-producing foods we eat with much more alkali-producing foods, especially if we suffer from symptoms such as tiredness,pain, illness, gas and skin problems.

The other thing to bear in mind is that the body has hundreds of different chemical reactions going on, for which it needs at least NINETY different things, including vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. Therefore, people need more variety in their diet, to ensure that they get everything their body needs, for effective anti-aging.

Identifying Depression

Everyone knows what depression feels like. Everyone feels the blues at times. Sadness, discontent, and fatigue are natural parts of life. There is a relation between the blues and clinical depression, but the difference is like the difference between the sniffles and pneumonia.

Depressive disorders are whole person illnesses; they touch the body, feelings, thoughts, and behavior. The depression itself can make us feel as if it's of no use to search for help. The nice news is that 80 to 90 percent of people with depression can be treated successfully, but the bad news is that only one sufferer in three seeks treatment. More bad news is that not quite half the American public perceives depression as a character flaw, rather than an illness or emotional disorder. In addition, only half of all cases of depression are exactly diagnosed, and only half of those get adequate treatment.

We tend to muddle depression, sadness, and grief. But the opposite of depression is not happiness, but vitality - the power to experience a full range of emotion, including happiness, excitement, sadness, and grief. Depression is not an emotion itself. It's not sadness or grief, it's an illness. When we feel at our worst, sad, self-absorbed, and helpless, we are experiencing what people with depression experience, but they don't recover from those moods without help.

The trademark of depression is a insistent sad or empty mood, sometimes experienced as tension or anxiety. Life is with out pleasure. People with slight depressions may go through the motions of eating, sex, work, or play, but the activities seem like pointless; people with more severe depression withdraw from these activities, feeling too worn-out, tense, or hostile to take part. There is often a nagging fatigue, a sense of being incapable of focusing, a feeling of being inefficient.

People with depression generally feel a lowered self-esteem. In a depression, you may feel that you are a defenseless victim of fate, but also feel that you don't deserve any better. Feelings of guilt, shame, and hopelessness are common.

There are often a host of physical symptoms, of which sleep disturbances are key. People may have trouble falling asleep or may wake up early without feeling refreshed. Others may sleep excessively, again without feeling rested. Appetite may increase or decrease. There may be difficulty in sexual functioning. There may be harassing aches and pains that don't act in response to medical treatment. But there are physical illnesses that cause symptoms like depression - Lyme depression, diabetes, thyroid conditions, anemia - and depressions can cause physical symptoms like other diseases.

If you are feeling depressed, it is important to be sure that an underlying health problem does not exist, and you should see your physician for a checkup. At the same time, if you know you have a health problem and are feeling depressed, don't presume you will feel better once the health problem is under control.

There is a sequential process in the recognition of depression. First is a stage of confused pain in which the sufferer knows he suffers, but doesn't know why. People often blame circumstances. Adolescents blame their home lives, married people blame their spouses, and employees blame their bosses. But there is recognition that the pain is not ordinary.

The second stage is recognition that something is definatley amiss. It may be that external circumstances have changed but the pain is on going, or it may be a slow recognition that the suffering is so dangerous that circumstances can't be blamed. This is a painful recognition that often takes years. It is an acknowledgment of a damaged self. But because of the nature of depression, the self-blame and guilt that are manifestations of the disease, this acceptance does not always lead to seeking help.

People then may move to the third stage, a crisis that frequently leads to professional intervention and diagnosis. It is often a suicide attempt or psychiatric hospitalization. The diagnosis often provides hope, that treatment or a cure is possible, and explanation, a way to understand what has only been confusion before. The fact is that this is a diagnosis of a mental illness, with all the shame and stigma that that entails.

The fourth stage involves acceptance of an illness identity. Depression comes to be seen as an outside agent invading the self, rather than as a manifestation of the self.

It is essential that anyone suffering from depression gets good help from a competent, qualified professional. If the warning signs are clear, always seek a professional diagnosis. Going to a health professional with your problems could prove, at worse, embarrassing, if the problem is really just a seasonal case of the blues that can be treated with without medical intervention, but the potential cost of failing to diagnose a serious case of depression should far outweigh any concern about conceivable embarrassment.

I do not recommend using medications for acne, such as,

" Retin A - helps to break open plugged pores, prevents new plugged pores, and helps to prevent scarring.

" Topical steroid, cortisone derivative, drug

These drugs and many others have serious side effects that you will want to avoid. If you are dark skinned and are using Benzoyl Peroxide, you can end up spotting your face as a side effect.

Most of these medications take three to ten weeks to provide results.

All my recommendations are for natural methods to relieve acne.

Different Remedies

In future articles, I will be outlining some of the remedies and steps you need to take to clear your acne. These remedies and natural foods that you use will not only help beatify your skin but will also help you to get rid of acne.

You may have to experiment to determine what works for you. By providing you with many choices, this gives you the best possible chance of you succeeding in gaining better health for your face. Also, not all remedies provide the same benefits to each person.

So this is where your experimental skills come in. You may have to test a few things, but in the process you will be learning about how to take care of your body. This information will stay with you a lifetime.

Though most people may be relatively familiar with what depression is, most people are unlikely unaware of how significant of a problem depression is. In the United States alone, statistics indicate one of every five people is depressed. When that percentage is expanded, the result is millions and millions of depressed people. In itself that's a cause for alarm, but what may be even more of a concern is that most depressed people in the US never get treatment. That equates to lots of pain, and lots of productivity lost.

During considerations of dealing with depression, it makes sense to consider whether certain segments of society are more prone to depression than others. It was long believed that women were most prone to depression, but in recent times this thinking has been reconsidered. The fact of the matter is, not only do men get depression but men are more likely to commit suicide because of depression than women are. Looking at depression as purely a gender issue then is not only inaccurate but may also lead to dire consequences in outreach efforts.

It's important then to be clear that men can and do get depressed, and that treatment for depressed men is available. It is true however that women are most likely to report feeling depressed, and that depression in women who've recently given birth may be especially significant. Depression in women after childbirth is common enough that it has its own terminology: depression following childbirth is typically known as postpartum depression, but can be referred to as perinatal depression as well.

Postpartum depression is not a particularly complicated condition: it's a case of depression in a woman who's recently given birth. The uncertainty with postpartum depression is why it occurs in the first place. Carrying a child over the course of nine months is a terrific responsibility, and that responsibility in itself can lead to stress and feelings of depression. A woman who feels a lack of support following childbirth can also understandably become depressed. It's believed as well that there may be a hormonal aspect to postpartum depression: hormonal balance in a woman rises greatly during pregnancy, and then drops back to normal within twenty-four hours of giving birth. What would be surprising is if this swing in hormone balance didn't have any effect on mood at all.

While it's certainly true that not every woman who gives birth becomes depressed afterward, it happens often enough that it's something to be aware of. The positive with respect to postpartum depression is that it usually clears without intervention; and in the event it doesn't clear without intervention, effective treatments are there to be had.

Acquired immune deficiency syndrome or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS or Aids) is a set of symptoms and infections resulting from the damage to the human immune system caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).[1] This condition progressively reduces the effectiveness of the immune system and leaves individuals susceptible to opportunistic infections and tumors. HIV is transmitted through direct contact of a mucous membrane or the bloodstream with a bodily fluid containing HIV, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluid, preseminal fluid, and breast
milk.[2][3] This transmission can involve anal, vaginal or oral sex, blood transfusion, contaminated hypodermic needles, exchange between mother and baby during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding, or other exposure to one of the above bodily fluids.
AIDS is now a pandemic.[4] In 2007, an estimated 33.2 million people lived with the disease worldwide, and it killed an estimated 2.1 million people, including 330,000 children.[5] Over three-quarters of these deaths occurred in sub-Saharan Africa,[5] retarding economic growth and destroying human capital.[6] Most researchers believe that HIV originated in sub-Saharan Africa during the twentieth century.[7] AIDS was first recognized by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1981 and its cause, HIV, identified by American and French scientists in the early 1980s.[8]
Although treatments for AIDS and HIV can slow the course of the disease, there is currently no vaccine or cure. Antiretroviral treatment reduces both the mortality and the morbidity of HIV infection, but these drugs are expensive and routine access to antiretroviral medication is not available in all countries.[9] Due to the difficulty in treating HIV infection, preventing infection is a key aim in controlling the AIDS epidemic, with health organizations promoting safe sex and needle-exchange programmes in attempts to slow the spread of the virus.

The reason for this is that millions of bacteria already live there, and by piercing these areas, you are essentially providing them with an open wound in which to thrive.

Lastly, it is also important that you understand that if you decide on a tongue piercing it can damage your teeth over time. The metal barbell stud that rests in the middle of your tongue over time will rub and collide with your teeth, weakening enamel and causing chips or cracking. Also, piercing your tongue, cheek or lip often leads to gum disease and other periodontal problems later in life.

If you've reached this point and have still not been deterred on your quest to acquire a body piercing, then you should at least know how to prepare for it and how to choose the right parlor in which to have it done.

Before you even walk into a parlor for the piercing make sure your immunizations are up to date to better lower your chances of an infection. Once this is done, then you can begin deciding on the right body piercing parlor.

For anyone who is under the age of 18, credible body piercing parlors require a parent's consent. If you know of a parlor that does not enforce this rule it is a good idea you not go there yourself. Establishments such as these are often unsanitary and may employee people unqualified to handle body piercing.

In addition to finding a parlor that is in compliance with the law, you should have your piercing done in a parlor where the floors are linoleum, and the furniture in the waiting room is not made of cloth material. This is important because parlors with carpet and cloth furniture carry hidden bacteria that can lead to an infection. Linoleum makes it harder for bacteria to live, as well as makes it easier for shop employees to sanitize.

Lastly, you should also make sure you get to watch the person performing the piercing remove the needle he/she will be using from the sanitized package in which it comes. There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking. Any credible establishment should actually do this without you even having to ask.

Body piercing is not a bad thing, and is not as risky as it probably seems now that you've read this; however, it is very important that you understand the risks involved when getting a piercing. If you want a body piercing, then you should get it, but for your own well being make sure and visit a few shops and ask questions. If you don't feel comfortable in a certain shop then go to another one. Remember, ultimately it is your body.

What is Parkinson's disease?

Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder that is chronic and progressive, meaning that symptoms continue and worsen over time. As many as one million Americans suffer from Parkinson's disease, which is more than the combined number of people diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy and Lou Gehrig's disease. Incidence of Parkinson's increases with age, but an estimated 4 percent of people with PD are diagnosed before the age of 50. The cause is unknown, and although there is presently no cure, there are many treatment options such as medication and surgery to manage the symptoms.
Parkinson's disease occurs when a group of cells in an area of the brain called the substantia nigra begin to malfunction and die. These cells in the substantia nigra produce a chemical called dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, or chemical messenger, that sends information to the parts of the brain that control movement and coordination. When a person has Parkinson's disease, their dopamine-producing cells begin to die and the amount of dopamine produced in the brain decreases. Messages from the brain telling the body how and when to move are therefore delivered more slowly, leaving a person incapable of initiating and controlling movements in a normal way.
Parkinson's disease can also cause several different symptoms. The specific group of symptoms that an individual experiences varies from person to person. Some of the most common symptoms of Parkinson's disease are:
• tremor of the hands, arms, legs, jaw and face
• rigidity or stiffness of the limbs and trunk
• bradykinesia or slowness of movement
• postural instability or impaired balance and coordination

Mother's Milk Best for the Baby

Breastfeeding is the natural continuation of pregnancy. Human babies are meant to receive their mothers’ milk immediately after they are born, and for about the first six months of life, mothers’ milk is all that babies need to promote normal, healthy growth and development. Breastmilk contains scores, even hundreds of factors that protect the newborn from illness and provide exactly the balance of proteins, healthy fats and sugars, and everything else the baby needs to continue the growth that began in the womb and produced the amazing little human being that he is at birth. A healthy newborn does not need anything other than his mother’s milk; in fact, anything else given to the baby will change the perfect balance in his gut (intestinal tract) and will interfere with nature’s provision of a perfect system to protect him from all of the bacteria and viruses that are present around him once he leaves the safety of the womb and comes into the world. Because of this, no formula, water or anything else should be given to the baby unless there is a medical reason for it. Supplements of water or formula given to the breastfeeding baby also “interfere with the mother to infant biology of breastfeeding,” (A Woman’s Guide to Breastfeeding, American Academy of Pediatrics, 2002, p. 11), and will result in the mother having a lower milk supply and the baby receiving less benefit from her milk.
Although formula companies want us to believe that their products come close to breastmilk, and they spend millions of dollars advertising the “new” components that they discover and add to an increasing number of formulas available, the truth is that breastmilk can never be duplicated. Breastmilk is a living, changing fluid. Each mother’s milk contains antibodies to exactly the germs that she and her baby are exposed to in their own environment. As the baby grows, there are also changes that take place in the make-up of the milk that make it perfectly suited to the changing needs of the newborn, infant and toddler. Dr. Jack Newman, a leading expert in the breastfeeding field, states: “The differences between cow’s milk and formula are much smaller than the differences between formula and breastmilk.” (Newman, Jack, MD. The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers, Prima Publishing Roseville, CA: 2000, p. 13.) He goes on to say: “All pregnant women and their families need to know the risks of formula feeding. It does matter. All should be encouraged to breastfeed, and all should get the best support available start breastfeeding once the baby arrives.” (Ibid.)
Why, if it is the natural way to feed a baby, does it seem so hard to breastfeed ? Why do so many mothers try and fail? Why do so many pediatricians advise moms to stop breastfeeding and switch to formula at the first sign of trouble?
The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends breastfeeding without giving the baby any other foods for the first six months, and that breastfeeding continue with the gradual addition of other foods in the second half of baby’s first year. They recommend “that breastfeeding continue for at least 12 months, and thereafter for as long as mutually desired.” (American Academy of Pediatrics Work Group on Breastfeeding, Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk, Pediatrics Vol 100 No. 6, December, 1997, p.1037)
In spite of this strong position on the importance of breastfeeding, many nurses, doctors and other health care providers do not have the specific training needed to adequately help mothers and babies who are experiencing breastfeeding difficulty. Often breastfeeding failure happens because hospital procedures in the hours and days after the baby’s birth prevent the normal progression of lactogenesis (the process by which the mother’s milk supply is established) or a misunderstanding of the newborn’s feeding patterns leads to the early use of bottles and pacifiers in the absence of a medical need for such intervention. This causes subtle changes in the way the baby sucks, and makes some babies begin to refuse the breast and to prefer the very rapid flow of milk from the bottle. Even if a baby has had some bottles and has begun to show a preference for the bottle rather than the breast, it is not too late! Most young babies can learn to breastfeed effectively, and most mothers can establish a good milk supply with the right kind of help and support.
Board Certified Lactation Consultants have special training in helping overcome some of these breastfeeding problems. The earlier a mother gets help, the easier it should be to establish breastfeeding even if a mom and baby have a rough start and encounter problems in the beginning. Other good sources of help are La Leche League, a volunteer organization with chapters in most places in the USA and Canada, as well as in many other countries. While it is ideal for mother and baby to be together so that baby can feed frequently during the day and night, many moms today face the reality of returning to the workplace within weeks of the baby’s birth. It is entirely possible to provide your milk to your baby even if you must be separated for many hours of the day. Do not let the necessity of working outside your home rob you and your baby of this priceless gift.

Dangerous Nuclear Radiation Effects - Basic Effects of Nuclear Weapons

Nuclear explosions produce both immediate and delayed destructive effects. Blast, thermal radiation, prompt ionizing radiation are produced and cause significant destruction within seconds or minutes of a nuclear detonation. The delayed effects, such as radioactive fallout and other possible environmental effects, inflict damage over an extended period ranging from hours to years.
Blast Effects

Most damage comes from the explosive blast. The shock wave of air radiates outward, producing sudden changes in air pressure that can crush objects, and high winds that can knock objects down. In general, large buildings are destroyed by the change in air pressure, while people and objects such as trees and utility poles are destroyed by the wind.

The magnitude of the blast effect is related to the height of the burst above ground level. For any given distance from the center of the explosion, there is an optimum burst height that will produce the greatest change in air pressure, called overpressure, and the greater the distance the greater the optimum burst height. As a result, a burst on the surface produces the greatest overpressure at very close ranges, but less overpressure than an air burst at somewhat longer ranges.

When a nuclear weapon is detonated on or near Earth's surface, the blast digs out a large crater. Some of the material that used in be in the crater is deposited on the rim of the crater; the rest is carried up into the air and returns to Earth as radioactive fallout. An explosion that is farther above the Earth's surface than the radius of the fireball does not dig a crater and produces negligible immediate fallout. For the most part, a nuclear blast kills people by indirect means rather than by direct pressure.
Thermal Radiation Effects

Approximately 35 percent of the energy from a nuclear explosion is an intense burst of thermal radiation, i.e., heat. The effects are similar to the effect of a two-second flash from an enormous sunlamp. Since the thermal radiation travels at roughly the speed of light, the flash of light and heat precedes the blast wave by several seconds, just as lightning is seen before thunder is heard.

The visible light will produce "flashblindness" in people who are looking in the direction of the explosion. Flashblindness can last for several minutes, after which recovery is total. If the flash is focused through the lens of the eye, a permanent retinal burn will result. At Hiroshima and Nagasaki, there were many cases of flashblindness, but only one case of retinal burn, among the survivors. On the other hand, anyone flashblinded while driving a car could easiIy cause permanent injury to himself and to others.

Skin burns result from higher intensities of light, and therefore take place closer to the point of explosion. First-degree, second-degree and third-degree burns can occur at distances of five miles away from the blast or more. Third-degree burns over 24 percent of the body, or second-degree burns over 30 percent of the body, will result in serious shock, and will probably prove fatal unless prompt, specialized medical care is available. The entire United States has facilities to treat 1,000 or 2,000 severe burn cases. A single nuclear weapon could produce more than 10,000.

The thermal radiation from a nuclear explosion can directly ignite kindling materials. In general, ignitable materials outside the house, such as leaves or newspapers, are not surrounded by enough combustible material to generate a self-sustaining fire. Fires more likely to spread are those caused by thermal radiation passing through windows to ignite beds and overstuffed furniture inside houses. Another possible source of fires, which might be more damaging in urban areas, is indirect. Blast damage to Stores, water heaters, furnaces, electrical circuits or gas lines would ignite fires where fuel is plentiful.
Direct Nuclear Radiation Effects

Direct radiation occurs at the time of the explosion. It can be very intense, but its range is limited. For large nuclear weapons, the range of intense direct radiation is less than the range of lethal blast and thermal radiation effects. However, in the case of smaller weapons, direct radiation may be the lethal effect with the greatest range. Direct radiation did substantial damage to the residents of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Human response to ionizing radiation is subject to great scientific uncertainty and intense controversy. It seems likely that even small doses of radiation do some harm.
Fallout

Fallout radiation is received from particles that are made radioactive by the effects of the explosion, and subsequently distributed at varying distances from the site of the blast. While any nuclear explosion in the atmosphere produces some fallout, the fallout is far greater if the burst is on the surface, or at least low enough for the firebalI to touch the ground. The significant hazards come from particles scooped up from the ground and irradiated by the nuclear explosion. The radioactive particles that rise only a short distance (those in the "stem" of the familiar mushroom cloud) will fall back to earth within a matter of minutes, landing close to the center of the explosion. Such particles are unlikely to cause many deaths, because they will fall in areas where most people have already been killed. However, the radioactivity will complicate efforts at rescue or eventual reconstruction. The radioactive particles that rise higher will be carried some distance by the wind before returning to Earth, and hence the area and intensity of the fallout is strongly influenced by local weather conditions. Much of the material is simply blown downwind in a long plume. Rainfall also can have a significant influence on the ways in which radiation from smaller weapons is deposited, since rain will carry contaminated particles to the ground. The areas receiving such contaminated rainfall would become "hot spots," with greater radiation intensity than their surroundings.
